It’s no secret that I’m an avid thrifter. I love finding beautiful and unique things at a fraction of what they retail for. There is an art to thrifting and it can be overwhelming for people who are new to it. One of the most frequently asked questions people tend to have is how do I find the good stuff? I hear people say that they go to the thrift store and never “see” anything. I have come to realize that for newbie thrifters, it’s almost impossible to see anything when you “see” everything. Most thrift stores are huge and filled with racks and racks of thousands of items.
Without the visual merchandising and sexy mall lighting that most shoppers are used to, it can be frustrating to find what they are looking for. A lot of people are what I like to call “mannequin shoppers”. A mannequin shopper is a person who cannot visualize outfits unless they see them on a mannequin in a store. Most thrift stores don’t have mannequins, they just have stuff (but it’s awesome stuff)!
Here are 3 tips to find your thriftspiration and get what you’re looking for amongst all the stuff with ease.
1. Create a Pinterest Board or Photo Folder on your phone. Any time you see a cute outfit, table setting, accessory, or anything! Pin it to your “Thrift It” folder. When you get to the thrift store, take a look at your pictures to remind you what pieces you are looking for. Having a visual helps you to see past the wrinkles and dust and see the beauty in the item.
2. Go through your magazines, favorite catalogs, websites, and of course Pinterest and make a wish list of single items. For example, if you see an outfit that you like online instead of trying to find the entire outfit at the thrift store in one trip, take the pieces of the outfit and add it to your list. You are looking for a long cardigan, tank top, leopard print skirt or shorts, gladiator sandals. You may not find all of the pieces at once, but that’s okay! Keep thrifting.
3. Newbies should only focus on one department per shopping trip or per thrift store. Thrift stores are huge!! You can spend hours searching the entire store looking for stuff. If you are looking for tops, only look at tops, if it’s housewares, stay in that department. Do not worry about what you may be missing out on in other departments. There will always be an awesome score on another day. They put out thousands of options each day.
